Castel Pietraio

Castel Pietraio lies in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, ten minutes from the mediaeval village of Monteriggioni and less than half an hour from the splendid town of Siena. Its history is linked with a complex series of battles for supremacy of the surrounding countryside. The oldest part of the castle is the high tower with its striking Guelph battlements. Between the 14th and 16th centuries, further building took place, adjoining the tower, of the square layout visible today, with internal cloister. The well gathered rainwater for the needs of the inhabitants and an external stone staircase joined the tower to the more recent constructions. The castle bedrooms are decorated and furnished in period style, with wooden beams and terracotta tiles, with the addition of all modern amenities. The old-fashioned scents of wood and resin, shellac and wax, bring back ancestral memories to those who appreciate them. The walls are of bare stone bound with tufo mortar, ceilings have beams and crossbeams of chestnut with terracotta tiles, in Renaissance Tuscan style. Flooring is laid out in old designs and the Carrara marble bathrooms have period sanitary ware.
